Megan Meier
From the third grade, Megan had been under the care of a psychiatrist. She had been prescribed citalopram, methylphenidate, and ziprasidone. She had been diagnosed with attention deficit order and depression, and had self-esteem issues regarding her weight. She was described by her parents as a "bubbly, goofy" girl who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
In 8th grade, she broke off a friendship with a girl named Sarah Drew. So Lori Drew, the girls mother, worked with her daughter, an employee, and several other people to create a fake MySpace account under the name Josh Evans. He was 16, attractive, and made Megan feel happy and beautiful despite her previous depression and concern over her looks. But Lori was using Josh Evans to gain Megan's confidence and to get information about her and eventually use it to embarrass her. On October 16 Josh's messages began to have a more aggressive and mean nature. When she came home and logged into MySpace the next day, she was shocked to see that Josh still was sending troubling messages and was sharing some of Megan's personal messages with others. People began making fun of her, calling her a fat and a slut. Her mother was angry at her for not logging off of her profile when people started saying vulgar things about her. Megan ran to her room, angry that her mother wasn't taking her side in this. Her mother stayed downstairs making dinner when 20 minutes later she got this horrible feeling. She ran upstairs to find her daughter hanging from a belt in her closet. She was declared the next day. Tina Meier, her mother, started the Megan Meier Foundation, headquartered in Chesterfield, Missouri. The organization states that it exists to promote "awareness, education and promote positive change to children, parents and educators in response to the ongoing bullying and cyberbullying in our children’s daily environment."
